Les Soeurs Racines : Taking Root in Saint-Ignace-de-Stanbridge
Les Soeurs Racines, or The Root Sisters, is the life project of Sophie Bélair Hamel and Frédéric Ouellet-Lacroix. Les Soeurs Racines is not just a vineyard; it’s also a farm with pasture-raised animals, a bed and breakfast, occasionally a country table, and always a playground for the couple’s two daughters. It’s a project that evolves through the trials, errors, and learnings of Sophie and Frédéric.
Since 2018, the winemakers have planted Melon de Bourgogne, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot vines (Gris, Noir, and Blanc) on their two hectares of land in Saint-Ignace-de-Stanbridge in the Eastern Townships. Some hybrids, including Frontenac Gris and Seyval, are also cultivated. In 2023, they added Blaufränkisch, a red Austrian grape variety. Everything is certified organic and vinified with minimal interventions. The few thousand liters of wine from their first vintage were mainly sold to restaurants in the province.
