Vignoble Coteau des Artisans: the choice of the amphora
It is near the Rivière Noire in Béthanie, Montérégie, that Karine Lamoureux and Jocelyn Deslandes planted their first vines in 2014, in a breathtaking setting.
Curious and passionate about wine for many years, they wanted to do things differently. Mission accomplished: in 2017, they became the first in Québec to age wines in sandstone and terracotta amphorae. For them, amphorae allow the fruit to fully express itself, while respecting the grape variety. Their Amphore Rouge, Blanc and Orange wines have received multiple awards over the years. In addition to amphorae, the winemakers also use barrels and stainless steel tanks to age their white, rosé, red and orange wines.
The main building, which houses the winery and a charming boutique reminiscent of a general store, is located at the foot of the slopes where 10,000 vines are planted. Karine and Jocelyn chose to plant only cold-hardy hybrids: Frontenac Noir, Blanc and Gris, Marquette, Baco Noir, Vidal, Petite Perle and Acadie.
Along with offering guided tours and tastings, Karine and Jocelyn also invite people to lend a hand during harvest time—an excellent opportunity to discover the wonderful world of viticulture!
